This is the full theatrical trailer to Watchmen, the movie adaptation of Alan Moore & Dave Gibbon’s celebrated graphic novel about a superhero murder mystery. The previous trailer certainly answered to the fan boy in me, but this one outlines more of the plot of the story.

I’m sure you’ve heard someone say it, read it in a magazine, or heard it from someone on television:

“Blank is the new Blank” ie: 30 is the new 20, Green is the new Black, Facebook is the new MySpace, etc.

I would just like to state for the record: This is a stupid expression. I understand the meaning behind it: to say that something is a better version of a previous or comparable item, but most of the time it doesn’t make sense at all.

Just to be a pretentious twit, let’s dissect the statements:

“30 is the new 20″
First off, how can an age be compared to a newer version of a younger age? How can you even have a newer version of an age or span of time? If you’re 30 years old, you are not the “new 20″ year old version of yourself. You’re 30, get over it.

“Green is the new Black”
Green is green, black is black. There is no comparison. How can one color be a better version of another color, let alone a “NEWER” version. Also, why does everything have to be “the new black”? Can’t we just still like the color black?

“Facebook is the new MySpace”
This is probably one of the few that even remotely make sense. Comparing two social networks or similar websites to each other is logical.

I’ve fed my unhealthy obsessive side and combined two of my time killing obsessions: World of Warcraft and Friendfeed.

In the picture is a desktop app called bTT, but I’ve currently switched over to Twhirl for a faster loading and nicer interface. I also tried out Alert Thingy which was nice and had a really slick interface, but just performed too slowly with the memory hog of WoW running at the same time.

And yes, I’m back on WoW. I turned it off for a few months to let real life catch back up, not to mention a general boredom of the game. The last patch added a feature for all obsessives like myself, “Achievements” which are tasks in the game for doing everyday things, like collecting non-combat pets, getting a shave and haircut for your character, fishing in specific spots, and many others. As if I wasn’t cracked out on the game enough, now I am actually excited to catch 1000 fish.

When I moved into the new house, I knew that a few things were going to have to be done. First I needed to buy a refrigerator, and we know how that turned out. Second would have to have something done about my ancient kitchen appliances.

The dishwasher didn’t work from day one, but I’ve lived with and without one so often it doesn’t phase me much. The stove, however, was a complete disaster. I would not be surprised if either one were older than me, mostly due to the hideous 70’s olive green color.

The main problem with the stove was that none of the dials have any indicators on them. Luckily since it’s a gas range, I can just look at the flame and know how hot it is. The oven is an entirely different matter, as anything requiring baking usually denotes being set at a particular temperature.

I requested them both to be fixed and today the contractor for the property manager delivered a brand new stove and dishwasher. That is the very happy and pleasant part of this story.

The next is not.

The contractor and his crew were busy taking out the old dishwasher when suddenly they were surprised by something they found. I hear “is that a SQUIRREL?!” coming from the kitchen. For fans of the show Pushing Daisies, you will enjoy this next part:

The facts are these: At 2 years, 5 months, 15 days, 5 hours, 12 minutes and 32 seconds of its short life, an innocent squirrel found his way into a vacant house. While exploring his newfound territory in frightful glee, this tiny woodland creature found himself lodged between the floor and the ancient dish washing appliance above. The squirrel did not immediately panic until he saw the dead mouse that had suffered a similar fate, and promptly had a heart attack.

Okay, okay, I don’t know if he had a heart attack, but THERE WAS A DEAD SQUIRREL UNDERNEATH MY DISHWASHER — and his dead friend, the mouse.

After the immediate disposal and recovery of my senses, I had to share the experience to the internet at large. Mostly because it was one of those “If I had to know about it and suffer, so should everyone else”.

I posted the following on Twitter:
“OMG The guys installing my new dishwasher found a dead squirrel and a dead mouse underneath! *BARF*”

To which spurred the following conversation on FriendFeed:

I’ve been using “John’s Background Switcher” for a few months now, and I don’t know how I ever lived without it. This simple freeware program allows you to automatically change your desktop background on Windows for any length of time (every 5 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, etc). Not only does it read local picture folders, but it also has online connections to Picasa Web Albums, Flickr, and even Facebook photos, so you can view your friends’ photos.

John released the latest version on Sunday, which added a new feature that is quite amazing. The program, along with all the other photo-connecting sites, now allows you to add an RSS feed (usually denoted on most websites by the little orange square with the wavey lines) to it so you can display pictures from ANY website that has one.

Take for instance the image above, straight off the developer’s website. This is what your desktop could look like if you were a fan of the LOLCat’s site ICanHasCheezburger.com. If LOLCats aren’t for you, you could also add a deviantArt feed, or FAILblog, or any other number of photoblogs out there. With the new RSS feature the possibilities are only restricted by the number of sites you like to visit.

I updated The Daily Haggis to WordPress v2.6.3 and the Akismet Spam Protection plugin this weekend, and this morning I discovered a new set of statistics available on my WordPress dashboard: Akismet Stats.

What produced was the amazing chart you see above you: A graph of comment spam on this site over the past few months.

What I discovered, much to my glee, was that since I swapped out WordPress’ default commenting system with the Disqus commenting system, it’s decreased my “comment spam” from over 2000+ comments a month to less than FIVE. In percentage numbers, my comment spam has decreased 99.9%!

“Comment Spam” for those that don’t run a blog, is when internet marketers leave comments on a blog or website that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the content of the article. It pretty much involves much of the same poor advertising skills employed as e-mail spam: poor grammar, mispelling on purpose, and always for the same services. Fake pharmaceuticals, real estate crap, or whatever. They usually leave links to their spam websites which more often than not result in a 404 page not found error.

I fought for years trying to keep this site clean of comment spam. At the worst, I was deleting probably about 20-40 comments a day. When WP released the Akisment plugin, it went down drastically, but I still had to log in occasionally and clear out the caught spam.

In August I switched over to Disqus, which is a comment replacement system that integrates with social networks, offers comment rating features, threaded replies, and even video commenting through Seesmic. Not only is it a great system, but the last major release allowed me to import all my old WP comments into the system for backup.

If you have a hosted blog you should switch over immediately if you are suffering from the same headaches and nightmares, switch over to Disqus! You won’t regret it, trust me.

My credit sucks, okay? Really badly.

I’m trying to improve it, but part of the problem with improving your credit is that you need to get some in the first place to improve it. To get credit you have to have credit. My brain hurts.

Anyway, because we’re moving into the new place we need to buy a refrigerator. I was debating going to one of the rental places just until I had enough saved to buy one. On a whim, I applied for credit at Conn’s website.

The next day during lunch I received a phone call from their credit department telling me I had a $1000 credit line which pleased me to no end! I could get a refrigerator, then once I paid that off, turn around and get a washer and a dryer. Plus I’d be rebuilding my credit at the same time.

Just to keep tabs here, we’re talking at least $1200-1500 worth of merchandise right off the bat within 3-4 months, plus much more — we’ll eventually need a new dishwasher, a stove, lawnmower, etc.

Conn’s sales “representatives” (and I use that word loosely) work for commission. Every sale they make they get a cut of, so of course walking into the place I was preparing for the “vulture” syndrome of places that are commission-based.

As we walked to the door we witness–no lie–two Sales Vultures flipping a coin to see who got our sale. We ended up with a somewhat nice lady who at first seemed well enough, but every second I spent with the commission buzzard led me to believe otherwise.

First it was her “small talk.” She asked me a question about what I’m needing a new refrigerator for, and when I told her that I was moving into a new house it was like I wasn’t even speaking at all. She did this later while we sat filling out paperwork, and I mentioned that I was enjoying the “Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman” series on their TV’s. Again, like I wasn’t even speaking. After that I just stopped speaking with her about anything but my paperwork.

Okay, getting back to the problem at hand. I gave her all the paperwork the credit guy told me to bring. After a few minutes of fumbling around on her computer (I swear to god this was her first day or something), she went and talked to the manager for about 30 minutes with no updates.

Then she came back and asked me to give her practically my whole life story. Personal references, previous employers, previous residences, my first born child, the pinky on my left hand, and a digital print of my eyeball. I obliged, begrugingly.

2 hours later I still had no refrigerator, and they were still debating every line on my paperwork. She would say “Just 5 more minutes,” which would turn into 30 minutes. Each time she just sat there fumbling on her computer, ignoring any response I gave her.

Dying of hunger (since we had been there for 2 1/2 hours for what should have taken less than an hour), we just left the paperwork with the inept woman and went to dinner before all the restaurants closed.

Today I got no less than 5 phone calls between the creditor and the stupid saleswoman, asking for more and more and more information. They didn’t like that my cell phone was prepaid, so they asked for another line or a home phone. Then the woman actually ASKED me if I could get a land-line phone instead of a cell phone. I only responded “Yes I could, but I’m not GOING TO. I have a cell phone.”

Then they asked if I could supply someone else’s phone bill contract instead of mine. I asked “This is my credit app, doesn’t it all have to match my name?” She explained that her manager would “accept” it. I was already uncomfortable with the whole situation at that point, and that last line sounded not only bad, but also illegal.

I told her I’d call her back, then about 10 minutes later I called back and let into the woman. I told her how what should have been a simple process turned into a nightmare experience and I was feeling uncomfortable with her and her whole company. I told her to rip up my credit app and never contact me again, I would be purchasing my appliances through their competitor.

Now I understand that credit applications can be a lengthy process, but it wasn’t just the information she was wanting. It was the fact that she wasn’t paying attention to anything I was saying (even correcting her typing mistakes on the computer), and that she was willing to do anything–even illegal or amoral–to get her precious sale on nothing but a $400 refrigerator.

CONN’S MANAGEMENT, If you are reading/listening: you need to train your employees in the proper LEGAL way to deal with customers. You have turned a potential long-time customer into an enemy, and it’s an enemy with a very LOUD voice on the internet.

Seriously, get your shit together.
