Punch-Out: The Movie

Almost twenty years have passed since the classic Nintendo game Punch-Out came and changed our childhoods forever. From the awesome music to the state of the art 8-bit graphics, no fighting game would ever be the same after Little Mac and gang were through with us.

As a tribute to the boxing classic, the guys at Team Awesome put together this mock movie trailer of Mac’s triumphant return to the ring. The film uses a good mix of live action, over-the-top acting, and graphics pulled straight out of the original game (and a few from Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros.)

I was a big fan of the game when it debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System and played it constantly, so I got all the in-jokes in the film, but even a casual observer of the game will get the main points of the parody.

As a bonus, after the jump you can watch the outtakes of the film, which at times can be even funnier than the edited final trailer.

More after the jump…

Hairspray, featuring the freakish looking John Travolta

I have officially joined the technology of the 21st century. I found a hell of a deal on a 27″ HDTV online and couldn’t pass up the opportunity, so I shelled out the money and couldn’t be more pleased. Now I just need to switch my cable box out for an HDTV unit, and I’ll be one happy camper. It’ll come in handy next weekend when I get my wisdom teeth pulled and will be stuck on the couch hopped up on goofballs. Good times.

Here’s This Week In Links for Friday, April 20, 2007:

A remake of a John Waters film? John Travolta dressed in drag as an overweight woman, AND married to Christopher Walken? Cinematical has your first look at the remake of HAIRSPRAY! [Cinematical]

Lawrence Fishburn, previously rumored to be voicing the planet-eating giant Galactus in the Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, has actually been cast as the voice of Silver Surfer instead. [Hollywood Reporter]

Joystiq has coverage of the art gallery exhibit honoring all that is great in the old school video game world: The “I am 8-bit” art exhibit. Over 200 attended the showing, some of which had “questionable hygiene”. [Joystiq]

For the IMAX release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Warner Bros is modifying the last 20 minutes of the film to be displayed in IMAX’s 3D technology. The last film broke IMAX box office records when released in 2005. [Sci Fi Wire]

Matthew Fox (Lost, Party of Five) is in final negotiations to play Speed Racer’s competition and long-”Lost” (heh, get it?) brother in the Wachowski Brother’s Speed Racer adaptation. If cast, he will join Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon, and John Goodman who recently joined. [Sci Fi Wire]

IGN had an exclusive interview with Orson Scott Card about his adaptation of his most famous work, Ender’s Game. Despite numerous stalls and script rejections, he still is planning to move forward with the film, even if it means producing the film independently. He also reveals that the movie will be a combination of the novel and its mirror novel, Ender’s Shadow. [IGN]

Extras wraps it up.

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have stated that the hit BBC/HBO comedy Extras will not return for a third season (or series, as they’re called in the UK). This is not much of a surprise to fans of Gervais previous work, the original BBC version of The Office, which itself only had two seasons that wrapped up the loose ends with a special. The same is said to happen to Extras. [TV Squad]

Heroes creator Tim Kring revealed some details about the season finale, and a few tidbits of what to come in Season 2. Death is inevitable for some of the main cast, but as Kring pointed out: “… the one caveat is, on a show like Heroes, you may not always [stay] dead” [Sci Fi Wire]

Jet Li is in talks to star in the next sequel in the Mummy franchise, boringly titled The Mummy 3 for the moment. The sequel will revolve around the grown-up son of the two main characters, shown as a little boy in the last film. [Hollywood Reporter]

Windows Tech Guru Paul Thurrott has some screenshots of his experience with the brand new AppleTV unit. The system is an all-in-one media center that allows video, music, and server features. [Paul Thurrott's Internet Nexus]

The reincarnated BBC Series Doctor Who was recently given the go-ahead for a fourth season, featuring David Tennent as the good Doctor and a whole new companion played by Freema Agyeman. [Sci Fi Wire]

Microsoft strikes back at Sony at the European launch of the Playstation 3. Here’s my favorite of the shenanigans: A price comparison of XBOX360 vs PS3 in beer cost. To the left, XBOX360 and several cases of beer. To the right, a PS3 and one beer. [Joystiq]

I Love Weblogs Inc

TV Squad - www.tvsquad.com - The best TV blog EVER

Okay, maybe this is just blatant kiss-assery, but I do love all the blogs under the Weblogs, Inc name (owned by AOL). What am I specifically referring to? Well let me list out a few of my favorites:

TV Squad (www.tvsquad.com) - I only discovered this site about four months ago, but it’s already my #1 site I check every day. The daily reviews and previews of my favorite (and unfavorite) shows are top notch, and they’re now even doing exclusive interviews. I actually applied to be a writer to the site a few months ago, but I think I need a little more experience reviewing shows before they’d seriously consider me.

Cinematical (www.cinematical.com) - The sister site to TV Squad, covering all things movies. It’s #2 on my RSS feed lists.

Engadget (www.engadget.com) - I’ve actually been reading this site since 2005, and always enjoyed it. It’s a tech and gadget blog, with a heavy handed snarkyness applied to the reviews that are always good for a chuckle. If anything else, they offer some of the most honest reviews of some of the crap electronic companies push on us.

Joystiq (www.joystiq.com) - “Joystick + IQ”, created by Engadget creator Peter Rojas, this covers all things video games. Much like Engadget, the sarcastic and tongue-in-cheek reviews are always good for a laugh.

Brian Alvey Weblog (www.brianalvey.com) - This one is pure kiss-assery.. Brian founded, or help found, several of the sites under Weblogs, Inc. He’s currently looking for bloggers to help start up a brand new Comics weblog, and I’ve just applied. Hopefully my review of Marvel’s Civil War I did a few months back will help me get the job.

Visit some of these great sites, and wish me luck on the Comic blog application!

Confessions of a MMO Addict

Hello, my name is Haggis. I am a Massive Multiplayer Online video game addict.

I’ve downloaded a couple trials of two of the more recent MMO games out there: Dungeons & Dragons: Stormreach and Lineage II. I’ve cracked out on World of Warcraft and City of Heroes/Villains in the past, so trying out new MMO’s is something I’m really enjoying.

I actually beta-tested D&D: Stormreach and was semi-impressed, but it was just too similar to WoW for me to actually want to purchase the game. I just read a review in Computer Gaming Monthly about Stormreach and it’s level-10 capping, so when I noticed a 7-day free trial (no credit card required!) on the official website I jumped at the chance to play for free. I’ll be playing on the Thelanis server under the name of Thantakos until next Thursday night.

Old Sk00l Gaming & Emulation

Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask on Nemu64I don’t know if it’d technically fall under “Old School”, but I’ve been playing the hell out of some Nintendo64 games the past week or so out of sheer boredom for the current batch of PC Games.

I’ve played GTA:SA to death and taking a break from Need for Speed Underground 2, and I had to cancel my City of Heroes account due to lack of funds and interest (don’t worry Unlimited peeps, i’ll be back soon), so I’ve been desperately searching for ways to kill my time.

At first I thought of playing the SNES Legend of Zelda: Link To The Past, but honestly, I’ve beaten that game like ten times in my life and it’s just too easy now. It’s like trying to play the first Leisure Suit Larry and trying not to beat it in 30 minutes.

I had dabbled with the old UltraHLE Nintendo64 emulator way back in 1998-1999, but back then it was really jerky and the controls weren’t perfect. Now flash forward to 2004 and I discover a couple new emulators that promise 99% working games. I tried three, and found that Nemu64 is by the best one of the bunch.

I can use my RumbleForce Dual Analog controller with Nemu64, which means I can finally use the controls properly to play the games, and the video support is awesome. It takes the N64 engine and applies all the latest DirectX techniques to it, so you get nice anti-aliasing and triple buffering added.

Lately i’ve been stuck on both of the Legend of Zelda games on the N64: Ocarina of Time & Majora’s Mask. Ocarina is one of the best games ever made, IMO, and before now, I had never really played Majora’s Mask. I discovered I really like it, which is no surprise as it’s very close to the same gameplay as Ocarina. (The image above is from Majora’s Mask, with the bunny ears :)..)

I also have Super Mario64, Super Smash Bros, and about 30-40 other N64 games. So far i’ve found that only about 10-15 of those games is actually worth playing. Boy Nintendo cranks out some crappy games.

Asteroids Record Unbroken After Machine Failure

Asteroids Record Stands

A Portland, Ore., man tried and failed to top a 22-year-old record playing the 1980s arcade game Asteroids when his machine malfunctioned after 27 hours of play, the GameSpot Web site reported. Bill Carlton was gunning for Scott Safran’s 1982 Asteroids world record of 41 million points at the Ground Kontrol Arcade in Portland, the site reported.

Carlton had notched up some 12.7 million points when the aging arcade machine malfunctioned. Walter Day, editor of Twin Galaxies’ Official Video Game & Pinball Book of World Records, told the site that Carlton would have needed to play for at least two more days to beat Safran’s score.
