Google Paid Me!

Google paid me!

Oh happy day!

I installed Google’s AdSense banners on this site back in February 2006, but took them down for a while while I was still in the midst of theme-switching. By that time I had accrued less than $20, so I really wasn’t concerned. I eventually added one back around November, and immediately I was making at least few dollars a month.

Around February of this year, the AdSense dollars per month was averaging out to be around $10 which is also coincidentally the same price of my web host. Basically The Daily Haggis was paying for itself, which pleased me to no end.

With the last redesign I added the additional ad banner on the sidebar and now it’s actually pushed the monthly earnings closer to $15-18. I’m actually making a profit off this silly website! (Roars with laughter)

Anyway, now that I’ve caught my breath, I’m excited today because I finally reached the $100 mark which is when Google will actually send you a check or (in my case) direct deposit right into your bank account. After the month of processing and such, today I noticed a $115 increase in my bank account.

Hooray! Now I’m going to go party on Google’s dime!

Site Updates

Decided to clean up a few things and finish up some of the extra pages on the site tonight.

Make sure to check out the new Movie Reviews page, now that I’ve finally gotten the plugin working right.

The Archives page is now fixed and displaying every article broken down by Month and Year.

The Subscribe page is finished and offers a number of ways to subscribe to The Daily Haggis.

The links are back on the sidebar. Don’t quite know why I forgot to put them back in. Enjoy the traffic, neighbors.

The comments box has been redesigned slightly with bigger Gravatar icons, increased font sizes, and a few behind-the-scenes plugins to help me manage spammy comments better.

That’s it. Have a great weekend and enjoy today’s Flashback Friday!

The Daily Haggis v9

The Daily Haggis v9 Screenshot

As you can tell, the site got a bit of a facelift tonight. Design is still basically the same as far as colors go, but the layout has been adjusted to allow more room on both the sidebar and the main content window. I’ve already added a few new features such as dynamic article rating (with no login required), and a few under-the-hood tweaks. I’ll go over the bigger list as soon as I get some sleep!

Expect more changes over the next few days as I fine tune the new layout and tweak the sidebar widgets.

UPDATE: Click below for a list of Changes & Additions in version 9:
More after the jump…

Introducing Smokin’!

Smokin’ is the newest Editor/Contributor to The Daily Haggis!

I’d like to introduce everyone to the newest contributing editor of The Daily Haggis, Smokin’!

He’s a frequent commenter on Pajiba and a treasure trove of useless pop culture trivia, so of course he fits right into this website of useless pop culture news.

I’ve known Smokin’ for over ten years now, since we met in English class back in High School. We bonded over a Nine Inch Nails song of all things, and since then he’s proven himself to be a great friend many times over.

He’ll be covering many of the same topics that are already on this site, as well as some new features and content yet to come.

Welcome him to the team!

(I’m sure he’s gonna kill me over that picture.)

Twitter - Mass social networking IM

I signed up for the Twitter service today after reading about it on TV Squad. My Name Is Earl writer Mike Pennie is buddies with the site’s creators, so for tonights episode of Earl they are incorporating the site into the show via “behind the scenes” info sent to the Twitter profile. (Only the West coast feed, for some dumbass reason.)

The service is basically used for adding instant updates to “what you are doing”, allowing you to send the status via the web site itself, via cell phone text message, or even through several Instant Messaging clients. I’m currently using the built-in googleTalk IM that loads with gMail to send updates.

Much like other social networking sites, you can add friends and “follow” their activities throughout the day through mini-updates.

Click here to visit my Twitter profile, or click here to signup for one of your very own and add me as a friend!

Computer SMASH

If you’re reading this article, that means I have successfully updated WordPress to v2.1. Wordpress is a Content Management System that is free and available to anyone that wishes to host their own website and needs software that makes pages dynamic and easy to create.

I’ve been using WordPress for almost two years now, since Moveable Type decided to start charging for its software. Once I discovered how versatile WP was letting you customize the layouts and the wealth of plugins available (especially the introduction of WordPress Widgets) I have never looked back. In fact I’ve recommended the software to anyone even curious about blogging.

The new v2.1 of the WordPress software includes numerous under-the-hood tweaks that should result in faster page generation, a newer version of the Spam-Trapping tool Akismet (which as of this date has blocked 9,500 Spam Comments since it was released with v2.0 last year), an auto-save feature for unpublished drafts (HELL yeah) and a few Administrator Dashboard graphical tweaks.

And now back to our regularly scheduled nonsense.
