2007: Sick of Serialized Dramas Yet?

Mr and Mrs Smith the TV Series - Not Starring Angeline Jolie

Two new dramas will be appearing on the television this year, one an adaptation of a blockbuster film from 2005, another a remake of a (horribly written and acted) classic from the 1970s.

First up is Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which just got greenlit by ABC Networks for a pilot episode set to debut next fall. The series is directly adapted from the movie that featured Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, seemingly happening after the events from the film.

The second is The Bionic Woman, the 1970’s serial drama featuring Lindsay Wagner as the 6 Million Dollar Woman to be shown on the NBC network. I have a good idea that this will be a complete re-take of the concept of the original series, as a 6 Million Dollar Woman wouldn’t buy very much in today’s inflated economy. (See Family Guy’s parody of The 6 Million Dollar Man)

Of the two upcoming series, I’ll most likely be watching the Mr. and Mrs. Smith series. It will have spy-drama, twisty plots, and a Husband and Wife team of super-assassins. The movie kicked ass, and as long as they cast the roles with that same great chemistry as the film duo had the series should be fairly decent.

I’ll probably watch the pilot of Bionic Woman just for laughs, expecting to already be disappointed. Maybe they’ll surprise me and do something really original, but they’re already ruining that hope by remaking a series that most of the television watching generation won’t even remember.

And just in case you didn’t already notice, Hollywood has run out of ideas.

For the record, I didn't think too much of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The plot was pretty damn shaky if you ask me. It seemed like their recipe was four parts action:three parts hot actors:one part storyline. I will probably not watch it if Ms. Jolie isn't involved, because, frankly, she's the only reason I watched the cinema version anyhow.

I'll give the other a chance, but mainly for the cheese factor. If it tries to take itself too seriously, it'll be a total bust.
