    My Blue Houston

The Invitation to the PartyAs I mentioned the other day, I was working on something called “My Blue Houston.” This is a project in the making for almost ten years, but perhaps I should elaborate a little.

My friend Sean creates ficticious TV shows about his life and everyone that knows him, although it’s not entirely ficticious. He takes the events that happen in his life, the people he hangs out with, and situations that occur as episodes in a “TV Show”, called “My Blue Houston”. Every year after each “season” of his life, he creates a soundtrack to go along with “episodes,” all of which are the events of the previous year, written in “TV Guide” format, including “Guest Stars.”

DVD Menu: the BlueprintsThere were four seasons of “My Blue Houston”, with a soundtrack for each one with complete designs/labels, everything. Well recently in an episode of “Red Cedar Place,” (the new show which he and his wife live their days in The Woodlands) Sean decided to put together the “My Blue Houston Box Set” which is every single soundtrack he made, plus the bonus DVD.

The DVD is where I come in. I volunteered my graphic and web design mad skillz to them to help create an interactive DVD complete with pictures, easter eggs, and the best part: The Commentary.

The Commentary involved Sean, his wife Jinny, Henry (ex-cast member of My Blue Houston, co-star of Red Cedar Place), and myself listening to each one of the songs off the soundtracks (nine discs in all). We would then record our conversation about the song and how it related to each “episode” of the show.

DVD Menu: the Blueprints, UpstairsIt sounds insane, but it’s so oddly fascinating. You get caught up in the whole funny aspect of it all that after a while you just start thinking of it as an actual show. We recorded the whole commentary like that, too. I’m just waiting for the day when some person comes across one of the DVD box sets and doesn’t ever get the joke that it’s not a real TV show. Hopefully all the Google searches will direct them to this website when search for “My Blue Houston.” :)

The thumbnails are all screenshots of the interactive DVD I made with Sean’s design. I wish I could put it on the web but it’s about 2gigs. I’m very proud to have this in my portfolio now, as it’s easily the most personal and extensive project I’ve ever worked on.

Most importantly though I want to wish Sean a happy birthday. I did this for you, buddy.
