The Goonies 2

The cast of The Goonies at the taping of the DVD Commentary in 2002.

The picture is from Ain’t It Cool News from back in early 2002.

UPDATE JUNE 2007:
Since this is actually the highest viewed article on my site, I might as well put some updated information about the movie (as well as a higher-res version of the pictures, sans text):

As of this year, any plans for a Richard Donner directed sequel are not looking good. Warner Bros, following in the tradition of instant direct-to-DVD classics like “Lost Boys 2″, are considering making a similar low budget cut of Goonies 2.

From Moviehole.net:

Richard Donner, director of the original film and someone whose been doing his hardest to get a theatrical sequel to the film up for years, tells IESB.net that the direct-to-video rumours are true; and he doesn’t sound too happy about it.

“There’s talk that Warners are doing a Goonies film - for 12 days - just to go right to DVD”, Donner tells the site, adding that they’ll probably spent about eleven dollars on making the movie.

So there will in fact be a Goonies 2, just not the one we’re hoping for. Maybe one day..

And for the original article:

Hey, You Guuuuuuys! ‘Goonies’ Director Developing Sequel

BEVERLY HILLS, California Mikey, Mouth, Data, Chunk and Sloth may be returning to the big screen, and with a whole new gang of Goonies or more accurately, Groonies joining them.

Richard Donner, who directed the 1985 classic “The Goonies,” and Steven Spielberg, who executive produced it and co-wrote the script with future “Harry Potter” director Chris Columbus, have purchased a sequel script and are pushing to get it made.

“We’re trying desperately,” Donner said. “We’re just trying to get Warner Bros., who owns it, to say yes.” Warner Bros. did not return a request for comment.

The sequel would reunite the original cast, which included Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin and others, with a new bunch of suburban kids, Donner said.

“The new group is called the Groonies, because they happen to live in a town where [Data], the Chinese kid, lives … and he’s got an electronics repair shop and all the kids hang out at his shop. He has this Chinese accent and he calls the Goonies the Groonies, and so the new kids call themselves the Groonies, until they get into a situation where the old Goonies have to save the new Groonies, or vice versa.”

Donner would not say much more about the plot or the casting but said Astin’s character, Mikey, would be prominent, and Jeff Cohen’s Chunk would return.

“He is a lawyer now, you know,” Donner said of Cohen. “He graduated UC Berkeley Law School top of his class and he’s now a practicing lawyer here in [Hollywood] and phenomenal. Damn right we’ll see him. I’m very proud of every one of those kids. They all turned out great.”

“The Goonies,” which also starred Martha Plimpton (”Beautiful Girls”) and Joe Pantoliano (”The Sopranos”), centered on a group of teenagers who stumble upon a map of pirate “One-Eyed” Willy’s hidden fortune.

Donner will continue developing the sequel after taking a few weeks to promote his latest movie, the sci-fi thriller “Timeline,” starring Paul Walker as an archaeological student who travels back to 14th century France to rescue his professor.
“Timeline” opens November 26.

I grew up in teh 80’s, and pretty much watched the Goonies every day! It’s a classic movie, and to hear that a sequel is coming out thrills me even more at the fact that my children will most likely be hooked on it as well!!

We can not let a sequel to Goonies happen. Goonies is one of the best loved films of the eighties and it does not need a sequel. Dont let Hollywood spoil another Good film with yet another POOR sequel. Its been far too long, leave it alone!!!!

Hi Markus,

where they were standing when they said it and what they are wearing
i used to watch it 3 times a day and i love the 80s and cyndi lauper
i think mikey on the goonies..in 1985 was so hott…to die for
and i am kinda neutral about the movies
its such a great movie to have a sequel but again lets see what donner comes up with…and well i really wanna be a kid in the film

The original is perfect the way it is. Don’t desecrate our cult classic Goonies by making a second one! Hollywood will ruin it, & ride it into the dirt! Don’t remake great films. Remake the bad ones and make them good.
