Python Shipped UPS Escapes In Truck
7-Foot Python That Escaped In UPS Truck Was Ordered Online
BRIDGETON, N.J. — The owner of a 7-foot python that was found in a delivery truck could be fined up to $5,000 for failing to obtain the proper permits to own the animal, authorities said Thursday.
Chris Altizer, 24, of Bridgeton, had ordered the snake over the Internet with plans to breed the animal with his 2-year-old albino python.
But Nathan Thaye, of Las Cruces, N.M., improperly shipped the animal Tuesday in a small box. The snake slithered around the truck in New Jersey before the driver saw it Wedesday and called police.
Altizer said Thaye was apologetic when he spoke to him Thursday.
“If he would have shipped it properly, we would not have had any problems,” Altizer said.
Thaye’s telephone number was unlisted and he could not be reached by The Associated Press.
Mark Leonard of the state Division of Fish and Wildlife said Altizer needs permits to own regulated species.
“In the interest of protecting indigenous New Jersey wildlife, as well as residents, the state requires permits for any exotic pets,” he said.
The python — which Altizer named ChewBoxa — was held at the Cohanzick Zoo in Bridgeton until Altizer and his girlfriend, Tina Gettings, 22, picked it up on Thursday.
Authorities believe the sender lied to UPS agents about the contents of the box.
