Shirtless woman joyrides in stolen police cruiser

Monday, January 20, 2003 - A woman who played police officer for two hours in a stolen Loveland cruiser Saturday night wasn’t wearing a gun or a badge.
    Or a shirt.

But police said that didn’t stop 22-year-old Amanda Briles - who has a lengthy arrest record - from pulling at least two people over and giving them verbal warnings.

Briles stole the car when police were dispatched to a Loveland neighborhood after a resident reported seeing prowlers breaking lights on her lawn, said Greg Eisentraut, Loveland Police Department spokesman.

Two officers parked their patrol cars near the woman’s property and chased several young adults who were loitering.

“The officers ended up arresting some people for possession of methamphetamine,” Eisentraut said. “During this time, 22-year-old Amanda Briles located one of the patrol cars that was unattended, got in it and drove off.”

When Loveland police officers realized one of their cruisers was cruising without them, they alerted surrounding communities and asked them to keep an eye out for the vehicle, Eisentraut said.

A Colorado State Patrol trooper spotted the car on Interstate 25 near Fort Collins just after 10 p.m., Eisentraut said. The car left I-25 and turned eastbound on Harmony Road.

After making a U-turn and fleeing for a half-mile, Briles eventually pulled over and was arrested, Eisentraut said.

Briles had plenty of fun with the car, Eisentraut said.

Briles had evidently lost her shirt at some point during the night, Eisentraut said. In its place, she was wearing a blue police coat that had been left behind in the cruiser.

Briles was arrested, accused of motor vehicle theft, impersonating a police officer and driving under the influence of drugs.
